Guidelines for Using Online Materials

Good practices to follow when linking to internet content:

  • Look for the website's terms of use and abide by them.
  • Always credit the source.
  • If you are adding the information to your personal webpage, ask permission or link to the site.
  • If you receive permission to use the material, keep copies of your request and the copyright holder’s response.

YouTube Videos

When it comes to educational use of videos posted to YouTube, the company notes:

YouTube does not own the content posted to the site and is therefore not in a position to grant you permission to use it. Only the actual owner of the content can grant such permission.

Visit YouTube's Educator Resources page for more information on how to ask permission of the content owner.

However, you may also choose to use YouTube videos in your course simply by hyperlinking in Canvas to the YouTube video and including the full citation, which is an allowable use.
